During the running of the Pathfinder Trial in WA recently, top local rally driver, Ross McFarlane, was killed when his car rolled on a sharp corner and was struck by a following competitor. Ross' death was a shock to motor sport in WA as he was one of the best known and popular identities in the sport, not only in rallying, but also in motor racing and administration. Ross started rallying in 1973 and in 1975 teamed up with navigator, Dave Burton, in a Datsun 1600. 1976 was their big year and the crew won trophies in every event they entered, finishing second in the Novice and Amateur Trial Series and sixth in the State Rally Championship. During 1976, Ross was a CAMS Rep. for the WA Car Club, a member of the State Rally Committee, a Steward for Wanneroo Park Raceway, and for the last three months he spent many hours at the CAMS office helping out during the illness of the State Secretary / Manager of CAMS, Bill Quekett. A talented driver and a fine sportsman, he will be long remembered by enthusiasts in WA for his bright personality and dedication to motor sport.
